Holly V Maslen – Artist, Designer, Illustrator » WAVES & HEARTS

Holly V MaslenWhen I started to focus on design and illustration work it had never occurred to me that I might be asked to design tattoos for people but, in less than a couple of months, I’ve been asked twice.

The brief this time was to design a back-to-front open bangle, including a heart in the centre and, to reflect the client’s love of the sea and surfing, some waves. This commission turned out to be quite an interesting learning process as I imagined that this design should be symmetrical but, having worked over and over the design in pencil, I found that it wasn’t working. I then draughted out another design with less symmetry and instantly it clicked, it worked in a much more satisfying way. I emailed the second image through to the client who then got back to me saying that although she liked it, she had had in mind something more symmetrical. I wrote back and told her that I had in fact done this initially but I thought it didn’t work. So…I sent through both images so that she could decide. When she saw the two next to each other she agreed that the more asymmetrical one worked better.

Holly V MaslenI found this quite an interesting process as it illustrated to me the importance of spacing and balance within a design and that although symmetry should provide a perfect balance in theory, sometimes, for reasons you can’t quite put your finger on, it doesn’t always work like that.
