Holly V Maslen – Artist, Designer, Illustrator » STUDIO SPACE

Holly V MaslenTowards the end of 2012 I made the decision to depart from my practise as a semi abstract impressionist painter and focus on design and illustration.

I was offered a studio space and, although it wasn’t something I had previously considered, it felt like the right thing to do. I wanted to make a commitment to myself in my new line of work. I don’t normally make big decisions quickly but with a lack of available spaces on the Isle of Wight for artists to work, I knew I had to move quickly.

I signed the contract a couple of days after first seeing the space and have found it to be a great place to walk into early in the morning as I can work without distraction. Although, saying that, there is a piano in the studio and sometimes I take a break to bang out some random tunes.

The building is an old Wesleyan Chapel. It has a basement, the studio spaces above (6 in total) and an impressive room for exhibitions and workshops upstairs, with huge windows and views of the Solent. I always think of the building as a cake, with three very different layers. It’s incredibly cold in the winter and, although us artists are used to that, I’m very much looking forward to the warmer weather.
